I mean come on, one song literally starts with snapping in rhythm.
Scraping Foetus Off The Wheel Nail Zip Trial Autopsy TakeThis album is just impossible to hate, with all of its gleefully deranged yet catchy as hell hooks, loathing nihilist attitude, lyrics that put 99 of self-promoting rappers to shame with the macho attitude they exhibit, and its profoundly morbid industrial autopsy take of creating a rock opera; from the first real track of the album (The Throne of Agony, holy shit) I knew I was in for one hell of a ride.Somebody here described this thing as an industrial broadway and I whole-heartedly agree with this, but there is oh so much more here prepared for surprise. ![]() Was pretty harsh against the last album (aka Deaf), possibly a little too harsh but it was just deeply frustrating because it certainly had potential but it just had bad stuff really dragging it down too much to really be great. So i anticipated this of course because what i heard of it was great and that it was more evolved and fleshed out and im happy to report that as expected this meet the expectations and i really enjoyed it So the album starts with this interesting interpretation of the Scooby Doo 2 monsters unleashed theme which establishes the whole synthetic orchestra aesthetic throughout the album with strings and overtures here and there establishing this cinematic stage play feeling that definitely wasnt this strong on the debut. It sounds like Foetus is working with as little as they have but working as hard as they can to try to expand it and make it sound big, which shows a lot of ambition and definitely leads to a theatrical and impressive album. This contributes to a lot of the songs literally sounding like Disney villain themes, if disney villain themes were banging and great and its very fun. Thirlwells performances are always very animated and he certainly gives it his all throughout the whole project. After that intro the album really starts with The Throne of Agony that starts off as this slow gloomy song driven by this guitar along but as the track goes along it slowly gets faster and faster along with having a part that samples the Mission Impossible theme. Its a real catchy song and a great start Like Deaf this album has some harsh noise interludes but on this its alot more brief like which is only 5 seconds long so even if they arent amazing they set a sertaint atmosfer and lead nicely into a more industrial song like Pigswill. Some of the other stand out tracks on this are Descent into the Inferno which is this odd shifting song with some synth pop parts and some 50s inspired whoopty doo back up vocals and like Throne of Agony it also changes tempo throughout the song, Enter the Exterminator has a fun Edvard Grieg sample and Anything - Viva is a cool slower closing track to the album with a lot of scraping industrial sounds in the first part and then an orchestra thing in the second half. But this album is very constant throughout and doesnt really have any low points. One very notable thing about this album and I suppose Foetus in general is how its pretty pionering and how bands definitely have taken a lot from this. Like for example NIN with some guitar work on Broken sounding straight up ripped from Pigswill and like it uncanny how a lot of California sounds like this album but that big WB budget and honestly not as creative. I think the song that shows this the most are parts on Descent Into the Inferno where parts sound alot like how Mike sounds when he does his wacky deep voice with some woptie woos. The influences for this album does show some to, i did hear some residents especially on the closing track and of course there are some elements from the whole industrial scene like Throbbing Gristle leaving a mark on this but filtered through Thirlwell wackier imagination. I think thats a big aspect of whats great about the best Foetus songs, because like with the Residents its not bogged down in some experimental musicians constraint crutch to try to be as edgy and disturbing as possible which can just get so repetitive and tireting after a bit as a lot doesnt bring any new ideas. There are definitely some darker elements at play here, with a lot of references to world wars but its abstract in a college. Its pretty neat. So yeah this was a huge step up and was really great. Its super constraint and filled to the rim with creative and fun production. Good job Third Wheel, you certainly hit a homerun with this funny little album and im happy i finally checked it out as it is an album cover i always saw on Spotify for years now (because they are in the related artist page for the residents) but never ended up checking out. ![]() ![]() Sure the music is evil but its so over exaggerated to the point where it comes off as purposefully comical. The vocals are over the top and the instrumentation is dark in a surprisingly light way Especially for the 80s which featured a lot of brooding instrumentation, this has those gated reverb drums and low register guitars but its all done, again, comically in my opinion.
